School Opening Institute

The School Opening Institute is an annual community-wide program that focuses on educational growth and development of our principals and teachers.

Each year, the Institute fulfills an important community role by offering a professional development program of the highest quality. The program helps principals and educators to begin the academic year on a positive, high note. The program enhances Jewish learning in the largest educational community setting annually.

This institute convenes more than 400 educators (430 in August, 2006) to learn from a major, nationally renowned speaker with specific areas of expertise that can help educators become better professionals. As a direct result of the 2006 Institute, participants became more aware of students’ needs, self esteem issues, motivation and family relationships and dynamics. The keynote speaker, Dr. Robert Brooks, Harvard Medical School, helped educators and principals to understand the need to not stigmatize their students in order to help them to become better learners. Dr. Brooks also emphasized the need to treat every child with importance (a key Jewish value) and to demonstrate that every child is an “island of competence.”
